Recently, the new event in a game I’ve been playing was themed around fairy tales. Around the same time, I rewatched a few old animated films, which rekindled my interest in the theme of fairy tales.
What caught my attention most during my research was the theme of appetite, or more simply, the act of eating, which appears in many fairy tales.
For example, there’s the Mad Hatter’s tea party in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the poisoned apple in Snow White, the candy house and the witch who wanted to eat the children in Hansel and Gretel, and the devoured grandmother in Little Red Riding Hood.
Appetite in fairy tales often seems to carry a sense of danger, or serves as a symbol of desire. This made me curious about why such metaphors for appetite appear so frequently in these stories.
But this idea actually came together while thinking about the other theme: the fairy ring. In southern China, some regions are rich in mushrooms. Even though people know that some mushrooms are poisonous, they still take the risk of eating processed poisonous mushrooms because of their delicious taste.
So I started wondering if I could combine the idea of appetite from fairy tales with poisonous mushrooms to create a unique game concept.
