Week 5

After I showed teacher the progress of assignment, the teacher gave me feedback:

  1. make reference board for each character
  2. To learn about the game “If found”, the art style and gameplay within it might be helpful for my game.

According to my understanding, the main loop of this game is to erase and then learn the story. The game’s graphics mainly feature characters and diaries, with a watercolor hand-drawn style that makes people feel warm and healed, and at the same time, it is more in line with the development of the story. From this, I was inspired to integrate narrative into the story background. At the same time, the interaction between props and scenes will make players feel more immersed, so I will also incorporate prop interaction into my game.

I drew a rough sketch following the instructions on the paper.

This tale concerns the protagonist noticing a peculiar sound, which vanishes the moment they become aware of it. Driven by curiosity, the protagonist searches the academic building for the source of the strange noise and encounters Bai Po, its creator. Bai Po informs the protagonist that this sound is a sonic weapon she created as per the school’s requirements. However, she never anticipated the school would conduct experiments on students by deploying the weapon within the teaching block. Bai Po warns the protagonist that prolonged exposure to this sound could cause irreversible hearing damage and urges them to leave. If the protagonist chooses to depart, the game ends prematurely. If they follow Bai Po, they will be discovered, at which point Bai Po will ask them to join her in searching for the weapon. During their search, they encounter Daylight, who is also seeking the source of the sound. Daylight informs Bai Po that destroying the weapon would allow them to feign its failure, temporarily freeing students from the school’s control and sparing them from further experiments. Merely retrieving it would only compel the school to continue Bai Po’s experiments, potentially confining her. Bai Po, however, intends to recover and enhance the weapon before deploying it against the school’s administration. The protagonist may then choose to follow Daylight, align with Bai Po, or inform on them to the school, each path leading to distinct endings: locating and destroying the weapon, subsequently returning to ordinary student life only to be eliminated by Daylight and Bai Po in the future; joining Bai Po, suffering significant hearing loss but unlocking the laboratory side quest; or informing the school, resulting in Daylight and Bai Po’s imprisonment. The protagonist resumes ordinary student life but, having been denounced, faces isolation from peers and ultimately perishes during the campus conflict.

Setting:

Weapon – [The Child].

* Emits a shriek causing temporary tinnitus (duration varies per individual).

* Do not attempt to drive it away, do not question it.

Driving it away will induce unbearable tinnitus accompanied by persecutory delusions in the pursuer.

Questioning it will prolong its shrieking.

* Origin unknown; suspected byproduct of human experimentation.

Appears through sound; by the time you realise the noise is present, it is already there. Yet it vanishes abruptly upon your awareness, leaving only tinnitus.

The Child was deliberately released by the school administration to test efficacy. Bai Po opposed this and attempted to retrieve the Child while wearing protective gear.

Bai Po: The campus specialist in treating bruises and fractures (though she also understands internal medicine, she doesn’t treat such cases). She appears aloof, but genuinely feels pleased when helping classmates. Rumours circulate that she conducts cruel animal experiments (true), and some claim she abuses cats (false – she owns a rather peculiar calico cat, though this rumour deters many from seeking her medical aid).

Daylight: The schemer. She orchestrates numerous urban legends and murders within the school, aiming to unite students in collective rebellion against the administration.

This mini-assignment prompted me to write a very quick short story. Though I feel the character motivations have some flaws, it has nonetheless honed my ability to control character behaviour when constructing my longer narrative.
