What is an Environment Artist?
To find out what an environment artist does, I did a quick web search and found some examples of work by environment artists.

I’ve also collected some screenshots from games that my friends and I play regularly.

In both of these games, the map designs are stylized to complement the characters and gameplay. They effectively establish the game’s setting while remaining consistent with the game’s world-building, without being so prominent as to distract from the main focus of the visuals.

After reviewing the work of environment artists, I have concluded that their role within a team is to create an immersive world while ensuring stylistic consistency with the characters and UI.
Environmental Artist in the Gaming Industry
While researching industry roles, I found that the responsibilities of environment artists vary significantly across different studios. In large companies, environment art work is typically broken down into specialized roles such as modeling, texturing, lighting, and world-building.

Although my long-term career goal is character concept art and illustration, researching the role of an environment artist helped me better understand how environmental storytelling supports character and narrative design.
Personal Reflection
Since this was a 2.5D project, I was only responsible for creating 2D assets and didn’t have much exposure to the software itself. However, through communication with the character artists during this project, I realized that environment art involves more than just drawing backgrounds; it also requires repeatedly adjusting visual details to ensure harmony with the characters without overshadowing them. For example, in the early rounds of testing, I frequently received feedback that the background was more eye-catching than the characters, or that the background and characters blended together so much that the characters were hard to spot. Therefore, I believe finding the right balance is a major challenge.Below is a comparison of the maps before and after the adjustments.

During this project, I also realized that asset placement directly impacts the player experience. As an environment artist, one shouldn’t merely focus on creating visually appealing assets but should also guide the technical team in properly placing them within the map. For instance, regarding the placement of trees in the scene, they were initially scattered haphazardly in areas without paths, which led to feedback that the layout looked awkward. We later made adjustments to address this.
