What topic have I pivoted to?
Instead of childhood in games, I focused on ‘Child Art’. I think this links more to my game, and it is a subject I am interested in.
Questions I can ask myself:
- How is child art expressed, and how can it be contextualised in games?
- How and why do adult developers and players enjoy childish aesthetics?
- What is the significance of Child(-oriented) art in gaming?
Resources
I used books from the library to inform myself on how Children approach art and how adults approach art for children. These are from the WSA library. I also used articles, reviews, papers, a thesis, and more online resources for my argument.

Some Scans
The topics I looked at with the library books explored some interesting topics: the history of Children’s Art, the study of children’s art and how they contextualise their world, and Children’s picture books.
Some takeaways:
- Creation comes naturally to children
- Children find joy in exploring new experiences
- Children understand shapes and the idea of symmetry from a very young age, but they often don’t have the artistic capacity to define it properly yet
- Children value colours, contributing to picture books being very colourful
- As an adult, you have to rediscover your love for the world to understand the way children just create
