Week 5 – Further Ideation

This week was spent analysing feedback on our 4 topic research and deciding on which of the 4 topics we want to delve further into for our game proposal.

One of the ways I chose to do this was one-on-one or small group talks with my peers about our game ideas, one of these talks – the most fruitful one – was with Xane.

On top of confirming my thought that the ‘Star’ idea was the best topic of mine to choose, we also looked into his ideas more – one of which was ‘moustaches’.

After he explained to me the importance of moustaches throughout history, and wanting to potentially make a game about a owning a barbershop. I came up with the idea of a game similar to that of ‘Papers, Please’.

Papers, Please is a narrative game made by Lucas Pope. It is a commentary on war, immigration and general corruption in many governments around the world. But the main inspiration I got for my ‘moustache game’ idea was to use the mechanic of owning a barbershop as a medium to tell an overarching story. Like what Papers, Please does – as you play as a border control inspector.

In the context of this ‘moustache’ game, I thought that it would be interesting if the barbershop was a time travelling one. Where the player would be able to cut hair from prominent figures from all across history, and they would be able to talk to these figures.

We thought it best to prototype this idea once we had settled on our own individual game topics.
