Entering the new year we have a large emphasis on how to generate new and unique game ideas. Below is going into each idea and how effectivley I found each idea helped me and others with the idea generating process.
Black out Poetry
Was something we tried to break down text and find something more interesting in the text than what it was originally detailing. I started, originally, making something more ‘comical’ such as ‘National and Local instituations — need to — service — bribes’. This goes against the original message of the article, but did make me smile. This is where I realised the essence of this idea technique. Being able to twist sentances into their most interesting parts and create a new branching narrative.
Whilst I think this is quite difficult to do for the game design stage I’m at, at the moment, I believe this could be very useful in creating a game narrative, as it can help break down other stories into their core words, and string a new story from them.

The Lotus Blossom Creative Technique
The Lotus Blossom creative techinque is based around creating some very basic ideas, then slowly creating various branches from those ideas. Below I have attatched my ideas I used this creative techinque on from Phase 1 of my project.

This creative techinque worked very well in finding more interesting ideas in initial ideas and, at that, finding holes in my original ideas which I previously, could not see. For example, ‘True Stories Behind Classic Fairy Tales’ is quite interesting but very large. Instead I focused on what inspired certain stories which brought me to HP Lovecraft’s Cthulu, which was inspired by The Nordic Krakens, which was believed to be inspired by washed up remains of the Giant Squid!
Systems
The Systems method involved us breaking down what went into creating certain experiences. Below I have broken some down that were done during class time:
Gameplay systems
- Their player intention and game state can define systems.
- Helps game designers break down the game design
- Looks at what different things are interacting
What systems are in my themes?
Sports Culture

- Income
- Gender
- Nationalism
- Drugs
- Sport Rules
- Point Scoring
- Stadium Culture
- Athletisism
- Teams vs Individualism
- Players vs the team
- Monetisation

Data Transfer – RYAN
- Servers
- Server upkeep

- Decryption
- Hacking
- Cookies
- Captcha
- Sending
- Receiving
- Cabling
- Wired
- Wireless
- Optimisation
- Physical layout
- Satellietes
- Ocean running
The point of this concept is to see what actually makes up the topic that we are researching and if there are anything other things that actually inspire us more or are better topics to research. For example, instead of looking into all of ‘Data Transfer’ you could instead research ‘Encryption’, how it started and how/why its used today.
