Visualisation of the Ocean

To get a better grasp on my ideas and how I want every thing to look in my game theme, I studied the difference in cephalopods, as the natural ‘beast of the sea’ is often seen as a ‘Kraken’ or ‘Cthulu’ creature with many limbs and tentacles.

This page is a series of my work towards this visualisation, including sketches and some analysis.

Shell Structure
The shell structure is the primary distinguishing feature among cephalopod groups.

  • Nautilus
This species possesses an external shell, making it the only living cephalopod with one. Its chambered design aids in buoyancy control, but it is considered more primitive relative to other cephalopods.
  • Cuttlefish
Cuttlefish have an internal shell known as a cuttlebone, which provides both buoyancy control and structural support for the body.
  • Squid
Squid feature an internal shell remnant called a gladius or pen. This provides a thin, flexible support rod that allows for rapid and streamlined swimming.
  • Octopus
Octopuses possess no shell whatsoever, resulting in a highly flexible body that can navigate through exceedingly small spaces.

Body Form & Locomotion

  • Octopus
With eight arms and no fins (except for certain deep-sea species), octopuses rely on crawling and jet propulsion for movement. They are regarded as the most flexible and intelligent among cephalopods.
  • Squid
Squid have eight arms plus two elongated tentacles and feature triangular fins on the mantle. They are exceptional swimmers and often navigate through open water.
  • Cuttlefish
Cuttlefish possess eight arms and two tentacles, accompanied by a wide body and a “skirt” fin that encircles it. They excel at hovering and demonstrate extremely precise movement.
  • Nautilus
Nautiluses have numerous small tentacles and utilize simple jet propulsion, making them relatively slow-moving.

Intelligence and Behavior

  • Octopuses are the most intelligent cephalopods, exhibiting problem-solving skills and tool use.
  • Cuttlefish are also quite smart, renowned as masters of camouflage.
  • Squid are social and agile, able to communicate through color.
  • Nautiluses have the least complex brains and display more primitive behaviors.

Camouflage Capability
Both octopuses and cuttlefish possess exceptional camouflage abilities, allowing for rapid changes in color and texture. Squid can shift colors effectively as well, while nautiluses do not have the ability to change color.
