The lazier a man is, the more he plans to do tomorrow.
-Norwegian proverb
I honestly don’t have words for my thought process behind how I made the characters this time.
This week was spent finalizing the male character designs for the game. Unlike the initial exploratory phases where I was drowning in references from OMORI and various horror media, this phase was purely execution. To break my own rule from Week 2 regarding Lynell Forestall’s interview, I found myself strictly following the discipline of Gary Hardle’s advice: “Do what you’re told.”
There was no artistic thought process. No sudden understanding of anatomy clicked into place. I simply sat down, refined the sketches to match Maria’s GDD specifications(ish), and cleaned up the line art.
Perhaps that is the thought process or the lack of one. In commercial art, not every stroke needs to be a journey of self discovery.
Sometimes, a character sheet just needs to be finished. The conundrum isn’t always the subject on the canvas.
Sometimes, it’s how the hand knows what to do when the mind is completely blank.
