In our first week, we were introduced to our new tutor for second year, Vanissa Wanick. She gave us an introduction to both herself and the course:
- How to put together a design-rich document that is both content-rich and clear.
- How to communicate across different teams and sustain a design vision.
- How to adapt and refine your creative voice and vision, and express it in a very clear manner.
- How to ideate and iterate, ask and use feedback, as well as prototype.
To begin though, we all presented in groups to one another our summer work – a short presentation on a game of our choosing and its core design pillars: my chosen game was turn-based strategy roguelike Into the Breach. All things considered I think my presentation went well, although it did last quite a bit longer than the 2 minute timeframe we were supposed to follow. Slides are attached below:

For our Thursday tutorial, Vanissa had us work in groups to brainstorm ideas for a game concept we would later be designing.
We were put into small groups – I was with Harry and Junhwan – and made a map of associations revolving around the term “Movement”. Prior to the session, we had been given the task of selecting and printing an image related to movement to take in with us to class: we used these as a starting point to brainstorm concepts around movement, sticking post-it notes on each one to keep track of our ideas related to each image.
The image I chose was of a Newton’s Cradle moving – at the time, I wanted to create a platforming game around the idea of momentum, and I felt this best illustrated the concept of maintaining momentum that the game idea was built around.

Later we applied these ideas to our map of associations; our notes revolved around a wide variety of themes like momentum, dance and migration.
