On Monday of Week 3, we had to finally present all four of our topics. I stuck to one slide per topic allowing me to adjust how long I spoke on each one to fulfill all 8 minutes. My final chosen topics are as follows:
Virtual Pets

This was a topic I felt was easiest to turn into a game, but I was unsure about the viability of a unique game based on the topic, as most of the obvious avenues for a “spin” on the virtual pet genre e.g. those exploring existentialism and horror have been explored in titles such as KinitoPet.
90s Electronic Music/Culture

This was a topic I was extremely enthusiastic about, but one I would definitely need to think on how to “gamify” without making something simplistic such as a rhythm game. My further research on this topic can be found on my post here.
Modernist Design

A lot have games have already taken brutalist aesthetics as inspiration for their worlds, some examples being Control and Straftat. This is obviously an avenue I could go down but I think taking inspiration from this era of design could lead to a lot of interesting rabbit holes when creating worlds.
Kei Cars

This is another subject which naturally lends itself to a singular genre of game, but I could also take inspiration from older titles that used these vehicles’ cute aesthetics to characterise them and include narrative experiences, for example in the Road Trip Adventure series:
Feedback

Overall the feedback for all of my subjects was very positive, with classmates describing them as unique but also having some difficulty recommending game ideas for some of them. Overall the most favoured subjects with my peers were between 90s Rave Music and Culture and Virtual Pets, so the former was the one I wanted to go for as it is the subject I am most knowledgable on. Adam initially expressed some doubt as to how I could gamify this subject and while that was a fair point Amy suggested some possible routes I could go down which sold me on it fully.
