Week 2

Weekly Goal Planning:

I made this plan at the start of the week, but after discussing plan making with Marie on Tuesday, I decided to make an excel sheet to plan out my year. This way I can view my deadlines and presentations clearly for both projects, along side my personal time, allowing me to properly dedicate time for work, rest, and personal projects.

Identifying Systems:

I was unfortunately absent from class on Monday, but here is a summary of what I missed:

Most of class time was spent defining the systems that make up our chosen research topics. But first, What is a system?

The basic elements of systems are:

  • Objects
  • Properties
  • Behaviours
  • Relationships

A system requires for all elements to be present to accomplish its goal. Systems are greater than the sum of its parts.

Information on systems taken from the following document:

Theme dive:

We then defined which themes we could find in our topics using the list below. Not all the themes applied to my topics so I only chose the ones I felt fit. I made these mind maps before my systems ones and realised they are very similar, but some parts are different so I decided to just keep them both in this post.

I also made mood boards based on my mind maps to reflect my visual interpretation of each topic.

Stains and Marks Themes:

Presentation planning:

As we only had 8 minutes in total to present our four topics (2 minutes per topic), I decided to try to keep my slides as snappy as possible. I limited each topic to just 3 slides, wrote out a script, and timed myself presenting. This allowed me to cover everything I wanted to say, without drastically going over or under my allowed time. I thought it would be best to include large images to visually describe each topic, as well as some basic written prompts and explanations. I didn’t want the slides to be too busy, and only used writing and photos that would aid my script. I decided to include a brief explanation on each topic with some of my research, and then explain why I chose each topic and the direction I am interested in taking them. I thought this would help people to give me feedback on the topic they thought I should pursue.

Below are screenshots of my slides and the relevant section of the script:

Without really listening to the script, the audience should be able to see how a geyser works, and the direction I am interested in taking the topic – using geysers to represent emotion. I took the words force, pressure, burst from my systems and themes mind maps.

I didn’t want my slides and script to feel like separate things and overwhelm the audience. So I made a lot of references to the photos I used in the slides – this photo is from my research into the El Castillo caves.

The artwork used in the community slides was very important to me. The styles are very similar and represent unity, love, teamwork and warmth. I think they really convey the positivity I wanted to explore with this topic.

I think focussing on key concepts, like visual style and philosophical approaches made the topic easy to digest. Again, the art used in these slides was super important, as black and white has such a bold aesthetic.
