Monday 3rd March

Today we received a guest lecture from Louis Torres Tailfer, a programmer and Unity engineer working at a studio called Maze Theory. He spoke about his previous experience in the games industry, the challenges he faced and his responsibilities as a Unity engineer.

Unity engineer responsibilities:

  • Feature Dev, Backend Dev, Bug fixer, Designer (working on things the designer may not have time for).
  • 50/50 amount of time spent in Unity and in code.
  • Help colleagues and provide solutions for issues they might have in the project (toolmaking for colleagues – not players).
  • Design systems e.g. localisation, different platforms.

General advice:

Research can provide different options for interactivity, learning something you might not have considered before.

Working in a studio allows you to use a library of code – code created for other games stored for future use if required.

Programmers and designers should both understand the goals and limitations of the game they are creating.

Programming as an artistic medium: Shader art – Using programming to create something visually beautiful.

Recommendations:

  • Start small
  • Stay open-minded
  • Take inspiration from anywhere, even from non-video game sources
  • Find the solution that works for you
  • Hone your craft
  • Take pride in your craft
  • Have fun

On Monday we also planned what we would work on in the upcoming weeks before our playtest.

This timetable was taken from our group blog where you can find more information on our planning:

My jobs were to finish the survivor camp background, and the resource camp assets.

Thursday 6th March

On Thursday we had a check up with Sophie and Vanissa to discuss how the project was going, and if we thought we would be ready for the playtest. A few group members felt their workload was unbalanced compared to others, and felt they needed more things to do but didn’t know what. In the end, Joe passed on his UI tasks to Anna, and Gabi would make character animations, so the dialogue scenes would feel more natural.

With new tasks laid out, we put shifted our focus towards preparing for the playtest.

End of week 6 😛
