I continued using the lotus blossom technique after class to help me come up with topic ideas. After my two failed attempts at completing the exercise properly, I decided to actually learn how to use the technique. I finally got it right with my third attempt. From my mind map of memory, I came across a topic I found interesting – stains and marks. There are so many possibilities for research on this topic, including the history of mark making, methods of stain removal, and stains as symbolic messaging used to portray something unwanted. I think I will lock in stains and marks as one of my 4 research topics for presentation.
I decided to go into more detail with stains and marks as the focus, with the hope that this mind map will help guide my research and inspire me to think creatively about the topic. I plan to do the same with my other chosen topics.

I wanted to explore community as it’s something I’m quite interested in. I like to learn about the benefits of a strong community on an individual, and how lacking a sense of community can have negative affects on society and wellbeing. After finishing the mind map, I decided I wanted to keep community as one of my four research points, due to my specific interest in the topic.

From my mind map on sunlight, I explored shadows and found many possibilities for research and symbolism. I liked the idea of shadow and light being polar opposite, visually contrasting and symbolic for good and evil. The idea of playing with visuals to represent a deeper message makes me excited, so I decided to make a mind map specifically for shadows and light to explore the possibilities further.

I wanted to make a mind map on overflow as I wanted to explore how the topic of emotional overwhelm could be represented symbolically. My thought process led to Geysers and it reminded me of the Mitski song ‘Geyser’ and I realised that the lyrics of the song reflected the symbolism I was looking for. So I decided to choose Geysers as my last topic to research.
