Why magic?

Quoted from my initial ideas post, “I find the idea of magic very surreal and something I’ve always been mesmerised by since I was younger. The endless possibilities of this magic are what I truly enjoy about it; the Harry Potter films greatly influenced me.”

As I previously mentioned, I was interested in magic because of the Harry Potter films, specifically the spells/incantations. To go into detail, I specifically liked the conditions of spells, because within the films, you need to meet certain requirements to cast a spell. One example is Expecto patronum. A defensive spell that shows different forms of animals. The condition of the spell is that you have to summon your happiest memory. If you are incapable of having a happy memory, you can’t perform the spell.  Another is ‘the unbreakable vow’, a type of binding spell between two people: if broken by either party, it would result in the death of whoever broke the vow.

Since I focused on and liked that magic could only be performed when meeting a certain condition. I thought of some requirements for these spells:

  • Being able to pronounce the spell
  • Having a certain feeling to perform the spell
  • Having enough mana/knowledge to be able to perform
  • Having to do a certain action before announcing the spell
  • Mixing certain objects
  • Swinging your wand a certain way
  • Drawing/writing enchantments before performing a spell

If I were to continue this theme, I would like to explore these conditions. However, for now, I just want to research further into ‘magic’. For example, my next step into research could be researching the origin of magic, different cultures’ use of ‘magic’, and the past/present use of ‘magic’.
