Why is sound so important?
Sound and music are both vital in games since they can impact a game’s immersion, mood, and engagement. For example, the section where the player wakes up in a forest would be very difficult to make them really believe that they’re in a forest. If there’s no sound, no rustling, it will lessen the immersion and worsen the experience of the gameplay. Now, reimagine the same forest scene except it has ambient music, rustling, and birds chirping; it automatically makes the place feel more realistic. Sound effects and music really help create an atmospheric narrative where the player can engage, improving the overall experience of the game.
Sound cues also help with displaying danger, success, and progress to help the player understand the gameplay thoroughly; rather than just relying on visual cues, they promote accessibility and communication in games.
