On Different Wavelengths Concept Research

Setting Sketch

The action of the game would take place in space. The player would be positioned in the satellite in the middle marked with a dot. The names of the planets are essential to point towards which planet the player should direct the decoded message.

The names for the planets were inspired by real-life planet names which can be found here: https://science.nasa.gov/exoplanets/exoplanet-catalog/

Below is presented the message that the letters from the prototype will form, and that needs to be eventually decoded by the player. I have written out all the necessary letters and counted them, so that the number of letters available for collection in the gameplay would match the message.

For this video please turn the volume up a bit to hear the collecting sound effect better (I apologize for the quiet recording)

What is the function of golden letters?

Golden letters count as double – if player collects a golden E, they gain two E letters for the decoding phase instead of one.

Ultimately, I wanted the golden letters to have an animated glow around them. A prototype is presented below.

Although I didn’t choose this concept for further development (partially due to low interest in it in the feedback form), I still might consider developing it in the future as a small side project to enhance my portfolio. It is a concept which focuses more on mechanics rather than narrative and it would be a good coding practice.
