Week 2

06.10.2025 – Game Systems

In week 2 we talked about our intially chosen 4 topics of interest. Everyone shared with the class one of the topics, the one that they were most likely to pick for further research.

Adam also told us about game systems and what are different components contributing to them. He gave us an example of Life is Strange and Pacman system elements and afterwards, we were supposed to think about what elements could be included in our classmate’s Xane’s theme, “moustaches”.

It was an introduction to the exercise that we later did in pairs. I paired up with Izzy, and together we went through her theme of “cults” and mine of “languages”. The exercise aimed to help us look at our topics for research in broader context. I found it very useful and although “languages” wasn’t the theme I ultimately chose for my final project, it helped me improve my creativity. It also made me consider “survival” and “non-verbal language” as systems that could potentially be used in my final game. Below I present the results of our brainstorming session.

Another exercise we did during the session, included attempting blackout poetry. By crossing off the words that we think aren’t essential to maintain the core meaning of the text, we are creating a “poem” that aims to send an impactful message with using only a few words.

I found the exercise quite difficult, but also interesting. I have never tried blackout poetry before and through this task I feel like I have improved my ability of critical thinking, as well as summarizing longer texts into a couple of their main points.

Below is presented Izzy and I’s try at this task.
