Week 4

20.10.2025 – Design Fiction, Speculative Design

In week 4, we approached researching our themes from more different perspectives. The lecture was divided into two parts – during the first one, we were supposed to prepare a collage about our chosen theme and in the second one, we were supposed to prepare controversial opinions about our themes from the perspective of a politician, a scientist, and a philosopher.

Notes from the Week 4 Lecture

Task 1. Blank Slates.

We live in a world where ___ (your theme) doesn’t exist, no one knows about it. It’s not in the history books or in the news. No one is talking about it.

Collage a headline for a newspaper to introduce ___ to the world. Use words and create images to present this new concept to a captive audience. Remember, they know nothing at all about it so think of the best way to communicate.

Collage is a great way to encourage accidents, create quickly, and think creatively so there are no wrong answers. Just have fun.

I really enjoyed making the collage as it helped me realize how important it is to use visual materials in research. I was focused on researching time in a more scientific way, where text was my leading medium. It was refreshing to gain some visual materials and look at my theme from a broader perspective.

Task 2. A Politician, a Scientist and a Philosopher.

Now that ___ is in the world, people are talking! And there are lots of opinions.

It’s time to look at your theme, or an aspect of your theme, through the eyes of people with different priorities.

Imagine you are either a politician, a scientist or a philosopher and you have a strong opinion on ___. Prepare a statement for a press conference, stating your case for or against ___.

Are you outraged? Or perhaps delighted? Maybe you are a scientist who thinks ‘sea monsters could be the cure to stress and anxiety?’ Or a politician who thinks ‘these new stars should be banned from being ever seen’.

(Be adventurous, it is more fun to argue against something worthy or for something awful).

Together with Jessie and Izzy, we thought about how we could produce controversial statements on the topic of serial killers. It wasn’t very difficult because of the topic we chose, but it encouraged us to use our creativity in a fun way.

Disclaimer: this task was intended to be taken as a joke. We don’t agree with any of the following statements!
