In the final week we met Jade Carter, who currently works in the games industry as a game producer. She graduated from Winchester School of Art in 2018 and earned money in an office whilst applying for jobs related to games design. Eventually, she landed a job as QA.

Throughout her career, she has worked on titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, Uno, Mini Mech Mayhem, and other party games. As a producer, she oversees the entire development cycle but also keeps the project within the budget and the timeframe.

Usually, during her day in, Jade tracks all the daily work, supervises all the meetings and plans project roadmaps.

To get to that point, she had to gain certain skills, and the time spent at Winchester School of Art helped her with that. In the course she learned to communicate, meet deadlines, understand peers, take accountability for her decisions, as well as work solo and in teams. That in turn significantly improved her performance at work, as she knew how to efficiently communicate with her team and adapt to any conditions.

Jade advised us to always be excited about the project we are applying for and not to get discouraged if we do not manage to find a job immediately – it is a process.

The aspect I found the most exciting about the lecture was learning how the process of Hogwarts Legacy’s production looked like. Jade shared which parts of the game she had the opportunity to work on and explained that a big part of the experience was learning new skills, such as animation. What was also surprising to me was how great the weight of soft skills actually is in the industry – a lot of times, they might be even more important than any other skill.
