At the end of Week 1 I had finally come up with three topics that I would like to study further and eventually present. These were:
I still needed a fourth but these were already enough to research at the beginning of week 2.
Monday
System Theory
The first workshop we had on Monday was being split into groups of three and reading over the theory of games as systems, trying to identify examples in games (including sub-systems) and also trying to identify individual systems within our chosen topics.
Systems are essentially described as the interaction between objects within a game, perhaps modifying their properties or behaviors. Systems can also be made up of multiple other systems which interact with eachother, or on the same objects.
I was paired up with Josh and Ryan and while we didn’t write down much about the systems in my topics, their subjects offered a lot of possible systems to write about, e.g Josh’s subject about culture surrounding sports could contain systems not only about the rules of the games themselves but also fan clubs, hooliganism, inebriation etc.
Themes
After this we explored different “themes” of our topics, which was similar but covered a wider range of possible research points. These included:
- Characters
- Locations
- Movement
- Technology
- Books
- Historical
- Films
- Shapes
- Context
- Colour
- Language
- Structures/Hierarchy
- Journals
- Sounds
- Facts
