Week 4

Character Design:

What makes up a unique and original character that feels familiar and accessible to an
audience?

There are many aspects a character can contain to make them more unique and original. This can range from the character being relatable to the player to having a distinctive personality.

Character Arcs:

  • Protagonist- The hero
  • Antagonist- The villain
  • Deuteragonist- The player/you

In this lecture we learnt about common character archetypes. Character archetypes are roles that characters typically embody in storytelling. They help players understand a characters intention and their behaviour.

For this warm-up activity we had to each create a basic character profile. I tried to merge this with my game concept and what I think a character in my game would look and be like.

Shape Theory:

For this activity we had to create a character using shapes only. For the head I used a circle, for the limbs I used rectangles and the body was made up of a triangle.

Every character you see tends to be made up of particular shapes to portray their personalities.

  • Circles- evoke a warm welcoming feeling
  • Squares- strong character
  • Triangles- heighten fear and show how menacing a character is.

Silhouettes:

In character design a strong character can usually be recognised still in silhouette form. Creating silhouettes can convey a characters mood and personality making them important in game design.
