Week One

29/09/2025

I can’t believe it’s already third year! This summer has flown by, however I’m so excited to start this year!

This week Adam started with introducing us to Jordan who will be joining us for many lectures which I’m really looking forward to. Adam also set off the lecture with an in-depth explanation of the brief. He broke it down into four phases which I found very helpful, as when I’m usually shown a brief upfront I begin to feel a bit overwhelmed.

Below are some notes I made about the brief and the different phases.

In a brief explanation in this moment of time, up until the 13th October, we have to research four themes and present them. Over time we will keep narrowing these themes down where we will choose our final one.

I’m personally really excited for this module as I love researching. I’m slightly nervous to be presenting often as I’m not a public speaker by any means, however I would love to improve this skill as it’s heavily needed for this industry.

Workshop

In the second session, we had a workshop where Adam gave us five different prompts. I found this workshop extremely useful, and I found that it’s a lot easier than I anticipated to come up with themes just from a simple question. Pictures from this workshop are placed below!

For the next activity, we chose one of the topics we had written down from the prompts. I worked with Maja and Izzy where we chose to use ‘Anxiety’.

For this particular activity, we used a method called ‘lotus’, where we had to stem words from ‘anxiety’ and then stem even more words from their connotations.

Below you can see the mind map we create, along with markings in red to show where our words originated from.

After completing our mind map we created an action plan for our presentation in two weeks time.

I aim to start mind mapping my interests (using the lotus method) to find four topics i’m really interested in. From there I will then complete in-depth research, ready for the week three presentation.

Finding my themes

To find my four themes I wanted to pursue in, I started listing random interests of mine on a mind map. I also used the Lotus method, that Adam taught us during our workshop on Monday, to generate more ideas.

I eventually found some topics that I thought would be interesting to research about. The themes I chose are highlighted in blue below. You may notice, at the moment I have five themes highlighted. These are all themes I would love to consider, but to narrow it down I’m going to make mind maps for each topic, and then see which ones appeal to me the most.

My themes at the moment:

  • Truth vs Misinformation
  • Paparazzi
  • Witchcraft
  • Mystery
  • Mythology

For the five topics I am interested in, I decided to create a mind map for each topic. I found this really useful in terms of knowing where to start with my prompts and research.

Paparazzi

Truth vs Misinformation

Witchcraft

Mystery

Mythology

After creating these mind maps, it gave me a clearer picture on what I want to pursue in. I decided to not go forward with the theme mystery as it felt way too broad and it’s more of a genre than a theme. With the other topics I knew it was something I knew I’d enjoy researching.

Final themes:

  • Truth vs Misinformation
  • Paparazzi
  • Mythology
  • Witchcraft
