Week 5

Narrative Design

Three act structure:

  • Introduction- where the story is set up
  • Confrontation- many events happen in this act
  • Resolution- the grand finale

What is narrative design?

  • Game mechanics that convey the story
  • How players interact

Narrative design vs Writing:

  • Writing tends to revolve more around the characters and their dialogue
  • Design is responsible for the player and their mechanics (how they move etc.)
  • Both have the same delivery, to create the games story

Design in narrative design:

  • Architecture choices
  • Fictional and mechanical side of the game
  • Storytelling skills embedded in all areas

Designing narrative choice:

  • Narrative choice can influence the workflow
  • Could contain multiple choices resulting in different endings

Narrative experiment:

In Monday’s lecture, in groups, we had to create a narrative with random sentences with only a beginning to start with.

This activity enabled us to think outside of the box and think about what ending we wanted in this short story.

Our own writing exercise:

For our own writing exercise we could choose to base it off anything. We chose the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. We each wrote random sentences that related to the story and then created a story through them.
