The Paintings unfold

Final Outcome – Blob Back Home Demo

I uploaded a playthrough video to YouTube, which demonstrates some of the game’s core systems and gameplay features.

This playthrough demonstrates the final playable prototype. Although the game is not a full commercial product, it shows the core gameplay loop, environmental progression, predator interactions, and the overall intended player experience.

Accroding to 1st playtest, I made some changes:

Clearer beginner guidance

During the first test, some players could not immediately understand the game objective or how to interact with the environment. So I added:

  • Opening comic and background story
  • NPC dialogue hints
  • Clearer UI and interaction feedback
  • Better visual distinction of food and enemies

to help players understand the game mechanics more quickly.

Scenes

The scenes in the first test were mainly made with simple geometry, and the game originally used one large open-world scene.

However, because there were too many objects in the scene, along with many characters using AI and gameplay scripts, the game would experience serious lag during gameplay, and could even freeze completely.

So I split the original large scene into multiple independent areas:

  • Train Station
  • Market
  • Park / Forest

As three separate scenes. This change not only improved the game’s performance, but also made the themes and pacing of different areas clearer.

Visual and audio

To help players understand the states and scenes more easily, I added:

  • Enemy detection indicators
  • Visual feedback while being chased
  • Background music for different scenes
  • Opening and ending music

to improve the overall atmosphere and immersion.

Basic fully playable gameplay flow

After the first test, I further completed:

  • Scene transitions
  • Checkpoints and respawn
  • Hunger system
  • Pause menu
  • Opening and ending flow

which allowed the game to gradually change from a gameplay test into a playable prototype with a complete beginning and ending.

I also created a website for this game, where players can download and try the playable prototype themselves.
