Phase One : Introduction To Project Proposal + Initial Workshops

The semester one project, project proposal is the beginning to the development of our final major project. Focusing on idea generating, game world development, and the documentation of my own creative process.

During this semester, I will develop one finalised game concept and create a structured project proposal document for this.

During This project we are going to act in phases. With the initial phase one initially focusing more on general research unrelated yet to the possibility of a game. Phase two will expand upon this research into one topic of my choice from my previous research. The last two phases three and four focus more on building game concepts from this initial research and then fully realising that into a concept.

This phase based approach will hopefully help to prevent crunch culture by dividing up the development process into more manageable chunks. By structuring the project in this way, it promotes time management and a more consistent workflow. Each phase clearly defines the tasks and goals I should be hitting, allowing me to have better organisation.

The first workshop revolved around creating mind maps that explored the different ways things can make you feel. Focusing in on our emotions within pairs. By beginning the process in an emotional perspective it not only helped me to better understand what may evoke certain responses in other people considering this was a group task, but it may also ultimately contribute to the development of a more emotional game. This is if emotional engagement aligns with the final concept I produce for my project proposal.

  • What makes you laugh
  • What makes you angry
  • What Stimulates you intellectually
  • What interests us
  • What makes you excited
  • Things that make us cry

This workshop was a relatively simple beginning to the project. As we are in phase one we are not yet exploring in terms of games, but within our own personal interests and wants. Better understanding our emotions and having them written down in this manner.

The lotus method was something I was unfamiliar with before this. It is a developmental method inspired by the lotus flower, breaking down a more conventional mind map in a different format.

It is a 3 By 3 grid of text, a brainstorming technique that branches off from one initial topic into many, many others. This technique is used to expand upon a singular topic, making you explore related topics you may not have otherwise considered.

Using the lotus method we paired up again and explored and created a finalised grid on a topic of our choice. For this initial section me and Ayse ( my pair for the previous mindmap ) chose closed minded people. This topic was from our initial mind maps about things that made us angry, it was something that we were both passionate about and interested in so naturally that was our chosen topic for this task.

From this topic we stemmed into politics, racism, incels, and stubbornness to name a few. We thought that these words closely relate to being closed minded, with some simply being a regular connotation either of us would have when thinking about the topic. For example politics isn’t inherently a topic people relate to closed mindedness, but it was something we both felt was relevant to the topic even if the subject matter as a whole is much more broad.
