Week 4 Group Communication

This blog written by Yushan Yao

Technical Designer: Yushan Yao

Narrative & Story: Zixuan Zou

Environment Artist: Derry

Character Artist: Junhwan Lee

Class Communication:

Leo and Yushan talk about narrative:

During the group exchange session in class, Yushan and Leo were discussing whether the content of the dialogue between the protagonist and himself in the mirror needed to be changed before starting a different level, and Yushan argued that the dialogue would have options chosen by the player, so different options corresponded to different levels, and so using the same dialogue would be sufficient to complete it. But Leo is against it, because Leo thinks it needs to be done according to the GDD, which mentions that the dialogue is different every time.

Because Yushan thought that using different dialogues would increase the workload of the program, and to ensure that all the mechanics could be completed on time, Leo and Yushan chose to use the same dialogues first, with Leo altering the original dialogues to make the plot make more sense.

Derry and Yushan talk about Collision volume of objects:

Yushan was setting up a scene in UE5 and found that the scene in Blender didn’t have a collision volume when the scene was imported into UE5, so the characters would fall off. Because Derry sent Yushan an irregular shape, when Yushan added collision volume to the scene, the collision volume was very confusing and the characters still fell off the scene. So Yushan would like to see Derry send her separate parts of the scene in the future (e.g. floor, ceiling, etc.).

The next day Yushan and Derry were talking to each other in a group discussion in class, and Derry found it a bit difficult to model each part separately and give it to Yushan.

When Yushan viewed the tutorial, it showed that you can add collision volume directly on Blender so that you don’t have to add collision volume in UE5. But Deery has never heard of such an operation and has never tried it. So Deery is going to ask Ross how he can solve this problem and if it is possible to add collision volume in Blender. But Ross was out of school at the time.

Group Communication on the Slack:

  • Ensure that you are the first to receive news:

I suggested that each time I send a message, I can @ the group members who need to receive the message, so that we can try to discuss as quickly as possible, and there will not be a situation that no one replies to the detailed message as before.Lee suggested that he would like to make it possible for all people to @ the channel when they see the message, so that all of them can receive the notification of the message.

Help received:

We’ve been trying this method for a week and it’s still working. People are getting messages faster, they can try to reply to messages at the first opportunity, and communication is much more efficient than in previous weeks.

  • Derry and Lee talk about art style:

This is the link in the Figure 1

Derry and Lee discuss the art style of the environment and show pictures of the art style he would like to use.Lee accepts the style.

But after Derry’s discussion with his teacher the next day, he decided that a more monochromatic colour and a simpler, more angular style would be better suited to our project.

  • Yushan and Lee talk about Character:

Because Lee can’t 3D model. But Yushan prefers 3D characters, after Yushan and Lee discussed, 3D characters need Lee to learn modelling from 0. Yushan agreed to use 2D characters in the game in order not to affect the project schedule. But this is technically a difficult task, Yushan has found tutorials and Yushan will try to incorporate 2D characters into 3D scenes.

In class Yushan wants to try out the previously discussed methods to see if they work, so he asks Lee if he can complete an NPC design by the end of the week. lee thinks it’s perfectly fine and quickly posts the NPC on slack.

Yushan says he’ll try to add NPCs to the scene this weekend.

These are images of the NPC:

  • Yushan and Derry talk about environment layout:

Derry visited a few more new supermarkets and took lots of pictures of them as research.

Since Derry was not satisfied with the layout of the supermarket he initially designed, he planned to redesign it after conducting more and deeper research.

Yushan still followed the old layout on UE5, but Yushan asked Derry, who completed the new layout design and sent it to Slack, where Yushan made the changes.
