Week 6 Group Communication

Narrative & Story: Zixuan Zou

Environment Artist: Derry

Character Artist: Junhwan Lee

Class Communication:

Yushan and Derry talk about setup GitHub:

Yushan enquired about the modelling progress for the Derry supermarket. As Derry was unsure how to design the supermarket layout, they wished to utilise the UE5 environment I had already constructed for layout testing.

As Yushan was the sole technical specialist within the team, no GitHub repository was established at the project’s outset. Both Lee and Derry would email files directly to Yushan, who would subsequently import them into Unreal Engine 5.

This Monday, Yushan and Derry approached Ross to enquire about setting up a new GitHub account and how to utilise GitHub. Yushan has now commenced synchronising via GitHub.

Yushan and Leo talk about NPC dialogue system:

As all NPC characters in the Yushan scene share a single blueprint, it proved rather challenging for Yushan to implement distinct dialogue triggers for each NPC. After unsuccessful attempts, Yushan discussed with Leo how to achieve this functionality.

Leo has proposed an excellent idea: I could directly utilise the feature for triggering randomised dialogue. This mechanism involves not assigning specific dialogue lines to each NPC, but rather granting all possible dialogue options to the NPC. Upon encountering them, a randomised line is then initiated. Since NPCs only speak unilaterally in the game and players need not respond, the absence of fixed dialogue patterns will not impact gameplay.

Yushan and Leo talk about character dilogues:

This week, Yushan implemented the character dialogue feature in UE5. While inputting the text content, Yushan discovered that although Leo’s dialogue scripts read perfectly well on their own, placing them within the game caused confusion due to frequent changes in address terms. Consequently, Yushan discussed with Leo whether standardising the address terms and making minor adjustments to the text might be feasible.

Leo initially felt the original dialogue better conveyed the sense of soliloquy and wished to retain the source text. However, after Yushan demonstrated how it appeared in-game and explained the rationale, Leo agreed to revise the text.

Slack Communication:

Talk about work progress:

As Yushan is responsible for updating the team website, she checks in with other team members weekly via Slack regarding their work progress and reminds them to update content promptly.

Leo always replies to Yushan on Slack and sends this week’s work progress.

Lee will send work progress updates to Yushan separately via email.

Yushan enquired about the modelling progress of the toilet in Derry’s character’s room, as Derry had promised during Thursday’s class that he would complete the toilet modelling over the weekend and send it to Yushan.

Summary:

This week’s discussions in class were more substantial than those online. In person, we primarily determined the tasks each member needed to complete this week. Online, we mainly confirmed each member’s work progress, ensuring everyone made fresh headway each week.
