Gap Analysis

To help myself identify where there may be potential gaps within my skill set, I’ve done a gap analysis, which will also help me see if Jessie and I might need to look for people to fill those spaces.

SkillCurrent RatingGap – Next steps
Art (character/environment, UI)🟩
Player experience UX🟩
Prototyping 🟩
Narrative🟩
Programming🟥I’ve only ever done small amounts, but I’m not confident, so either I need to dedicate time to learn at least the basics, but also consider looking for someone to join and help.
3D modelling/texturing/rigging/animation🟨I’m alright with some 3D modelling as I’ve used Blender, but I would be happy to learn and develop more on this.
Audio (creating, sourcing, implementing🟥Other than sourcing from YouTube, I’ve not really ever touched audio when it comes to games, so again could be something to learn or see if anyone could help.
Production management 🟩

Group talk feedback

During the small group talk, I received some really helpful advice. Some of that being the following;

Consider going plastic-free” This comment was from Adam, which I had already considered, as one of our learning outcomes was A5 – social, environmental and ethical dimensions of games design and art. I had tried to plan out that everything wouldn’t include plastic due to the environmental issues going on in the world, although the tokens in the game would have been plastic, so Adam has set me a challenge of perhaps finding ways to get around not using plastic for the tokens. He also said that if I’m not to include plastic, think of how this can impact potential transportation of the game if items aren’t wrapped, as that is an issue that the creator of Day Break faced.

Have you done any digital tabletop prototypes?” This was a collective comment from Sam, Adam and Jordan. Initially, I had planned to only do physical prototypes, but Adam raised the potential issue of I’d be potentially limited to how many people could access, play and then give feedback. So it was suggested that I create a prototype on Dextrous. You’ll be able to find that prototype here: https://sites.wsagames.com/is3g23/out-of-focus-in-depth-research

Comment from Sam: “New board game café opened in Winchester, could go and talk to them/see if people would want to play test”

Comment from Adam: “Consider the cost, with this being our final major product, it needs to be high quality, could be expensive”

Adam also mentioned how he might get previous alumni students to come in and talk to me about the whole board game process.

On Wednesday, Jessie and I plan on meeting up to go over our ideas and also work collaboratively on our final game idea, ready for week 9. The work done on Wednesday can be found here: https://sites.wsagames.com/is3g23/broken-lens-in-depth-research
