week 6

Monday

On Monday, we listened to Sarah Cole’s speech “Puzzling Narratives”, which mainly discussed what “narrative design” is. She believes that narrative design is not just about writing plots or dialogues, but more like designing the way players experience stories. Especially in reasoning games, the real difficulty is not “writing a good case”, but how to let players discover clues, generate reasoning, and maintain a sense of participation in the process. She mentioned that traditional detective stories are usually strictly controlled by the author’s information and rhythm, but the behaviour of players in the game is unpredictable, so designers must constantly find a balance between “free exploration” and “proper guidance”. In her speech, she also listed examples of “Return of the Obra Dinn”, “Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments”, “The Witcher 3” and other works, which made me understand the good recommendation. The game is actually more like designing the player’s thinking process, rather than just telling a story.

Tuesday

We are already preparing for the test this week. Yufan Wei has organised the list of things we have to do:

We decided to send our completed blog to Elina every week, preferably with pictures or videos, so as to facilitate her to organise the group’s weekly blog.

Thursday

I began to modify my existing main menu according to the plan. I used the font of procreate software to add titles. In order to make the visual effect better, I also shadowed the game title to make it look more three-dimensional.

When adding, the paintings on the wall will look a little crowded, so I adjusted the size of the paintings on the wall to make the whole look more harmonious.

After discussing with the group members, Elina gave me some suggestions. I will modify part of the content according to it, such as the placement of the ”start“ button and the size of the picture frame on the wall, so as to be closer to Lettie‘s design.

Next, my main task is to draw the key prop “camera”. In order to be able to divide it into three parts: lens, the body of the camera and the button, I decided to draw a relatively large camera. First of all, I found some inspiration about the camera on Pinterest and finally drew the complete part of the camera (the detailed process is in the visual research section). In order to make it easier to draw, I will divide them into three parts in the future.

Subsequently, I added the camera to the main menu page. Fortunately, it goes well with the main menu,This is the modified main menu,In the end, our group intends to adopt this version.
