Digital Nostalgia

Digital nostalgia is a sentiment of nostalgia felt by a generation that grew up with the internet and digital technology, for the technology, aesthetics, and experiences of the early digital age (such as the 1990s and early 2000s).

It’s not a longing for the ‘pre-digital era’, but rather for one’s digital childhood—a unique layer of memories comprised of rough pixels, the noise of dial-up internet, the interfaces of old-fashioned operating systems, and early internet culture. This nostalgia is inherently contradictory: it longs for technology itself, while the essence of technology is the continuous elimination of the past.

The intention is to include CRT monitors with large heads, Windows 98 screensavers, MP3 players, floppy disks, etc. in the game, not as ‘retro props,’ but as carriers of memories and triggers of emotions.
