Pitching games, choosing projects/ groups

This week marks the first week of the second semester, and we are embarking on a new group-based collaborative learning module. By the end of this module, we need to be able to develop a game using Unity or other game development software, and this game must have a complete playable component.

On Monday, we had an introduction to the module and the positions within the groups. We couldn’t work on our own GDDs, but we could vote for the GDDs of six classmates that we were most interested in. Regarding the position within the group, my idea is that I most want to be involved in the art aspect, which is my strong point. I think I can leverage my advantages there. The positions I least want to take on are technical and mechanic ones, as I’m quite weak in these areas. I can try, but I don’t want to hold back my team members before I succeed. I prefer to choose GDDs that interest me in terms of visual effects and story.

On Thursday, the groups and everyone’s roles were determined. Although I didn’t take on an art position, Narrative & Story is a moderately challenging task for me. This is a great opportunity to improve my English writing skills and maintain the integrity and rationality of the game’s setting. This week, my main focus was to fully understand all the initial settings in Oliver’s GDD and research about the ASD community, their world, and their differences, and try to think from their perspective. This is very helpful for the design of the protagonist. I need to make players empathize with him and feel what he feels.
