The core inspiration you drew from ‘Superliminal’ for my game
‘Superliminal’ uses perspective illusion as its core gameplay: objects appear larger when placed close, and a fake door becomes a real door from a different angle. The biggest inspiration this gives you is that in games, how players observe the world can directly rewrite the rules of the world and the truth of the story.
Angle is Truth
In the game, an ‘EXIT’ painting on the wall becomes a real door you can walk through when viewed from the side. What you see depends on where you are looking.
Applied to my game: In the same memory scene (such as a childhood toy that mysteriously disappeared), from the player’s normal perspective, the toy is on the shelf, but when crouching down to the height of your childhood self, you can only see the table legs and the bottom shelf, not the toy. You think your mother took it away or lost it. The truth is not singular; it depends on whose perspective you adopt.
The game’s teaching module are impressive
The game doesn’t use text to teach players how to use perspective or how things appear larger when closer; it simply arranges the items, and I discovered it myself while playing.
In my game, I might place a glowing cube in the first room. The player walks through normally without incident, but if they happen to crouch down, they’ll discover that each face of the cube is engraved with different words. The player immediately learns: in this world, changing your perspective equals discovering different stories.
Don’t just turn memories into a playing video. Turn it into an explorable 3D space. The player walks in, moves, crouches, approaches—these actions themselves are “interpreting” the memory. How they see it determines how the memory is presented. Ultimately, they don’t find a standard answer, but a unique emotional truth defined by their own exploration path (which allows for different endings). This transforms listening to a story into experiencing the process of story formation.
