The development of Shadows Between Time reflects a clear shift from an initially setting-driven stealth concept toward a more experience-led design approach. Early iterations of the project placed strong emphasis on historical context, atmosphere, and genre conventions. While these elements provided a clear aesthetic foundation, reflection revealed that the project lacked a strong emotional throughline that directly connected player feeling to moment-to-moment gameplay.
Through ongoing experimentation, critical evaluation, and engagement with weekly lectures and workshops, the project’s focus gradually shifted toward player experience, movement flow, and tension management. This process highlighted the importance of prioritising how the game feels over what it contains. By reducing scope and de-emphasising combat and complexity, the design became more cohesive and intentional.
Iteration played a key role in refining the project’s identity. Design decisions were continually reassessed in relation to the intended experience of urgency, near-failure, and adaptability. This reflective process demonstrated how restraint and clarity can strengthen a concept, allowing core mechanics to serve emotion rather than quantity.
The final design of Shadows Between Time aligns closely with the module’s emphasis on intention, iteration, and critical design thinking. The project demonstrates an understanding of how player emotion can be shaped through movement, space, and pacing, and how reflective practice can lead to stronger, more focused design outcomes.
