5. Evolved Idea and Mindmap

Following my initial idea, research, and engine experimentation, I realised that my stated objective of “make players experience loneliness and a sense of being misunderstood” proved overly general and abstract. So I centred my brainstorming around this core sentiment, creating a mind map to facilitate a more detailed approach to game development moving forward.

Mindmap:

After completing this mind map, I resolved to research highly sensitive persons (HSPs) and those with Asperger’s syndrome (ASD). Understanding the genuine challenges they face within society, I aim to integrate these insights into level design.
Given the excessive complexity of projecting shadows from 3D characters interacting within 2D environments, I decided to alter the core mechanics. Instead, I will develop a Metroidvania-style 2D side-scrolling platformer. Traditional Metroidvanias unlock areas by acquiring new abilities. My concept involves the protagonist progressing through levels by continually discovering and embracing their inherent strengths: sensitivity, focus, and creativity. Rather than relentlessly pursuing conformity in society after experiencing loneliness.
