Game Overview

Game Name: “Rooted but Flow”

Genre:

It is a 2D action-adventure Metroidvania-like game about loneliness and self-development.

Set in a quiet, fantasy world, the player navigates darkness with only a small source of light. As the journey unfolds, the player learns to set boundaries and eventually to express themselves through music, enabling the surrounding environment to understand and support them. Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s phrase “I’m rooted, but I flow,” the game explores how to cope with and embrace loneliness.

Elevator pitch:

It’s a noisy world out there. To survive, you have to find and express yourself.

Essential Experience:

To make the player grow on their own within an environment that feels isolating and lonely.

At the beginning, the player feels lonely, moving carefully through darkness. As the game progresses, the player gradually learns how to protect themselves and express who they are. By the end, the player reaches a state of acceptance and peace, where loneliness no longer feels overwhelming but is manageable and understood.

Unique selling point:

  •  No unnecessary dialogue or exposition
The game contains no lengthy conversations, text boxes, or narrative explanations. All meaning is conveyed through mechanics, movement, light, and sound, allowing players to engage without interruption or information overload.
  • Minimalist, stylised visual design
The art style is deliberately simple and restrained, using limited colour palettes, soft lighting, and abstract forms to create a cohesive visual identity that supports emotional clarity rather than visual complexity.
  • Calming, music-driven soundscape
The soundtrack focuses on gentle, atmospheric compositions that respond to player actions. Music is not only a background element, but a core expressive tool that shapes mood and interaction, encouraging a slow and reflective pace of play.
