SteamDB Player Research Analysis:

To better understand the potential audience size and engagement patterns for this project, I conducted a focused user analysis using SteamDB, selecting three representative titles within the same or adjacent genre space. These included two commercially successful and widely recognised games: Hollow Knight, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, as well as Animal Well, a more niche title that is highly regarded among core and hardcore players.

The data shows that commercially successful Metroidvania titles such as Hollow Knight maintain exceptionally high long-term engagement. Despite being released several years ago, Hollow Knight still sustains over 20,000 concurrent players, with an all-time peak close to 100,000, and owner estimates ranging between 8 and 18 million. This demonstrates the strong longevity and replay value of the genre when exploration depth and world design resonate with players. Similarly, Ori and the Will of the Wisps continues to attract over 1,000 concurrent players years after release, with total owners estimated at 4–5 million, confirming that emotionally driven, visually distinctive Metroidvania games can achieve large-scale commercial success.

In contrast, Animal Well represents a smaller but highly engaged niche audience. While its current concurrent player count is significantly lower (around 200–300 players), its estimated owners range between 680,000–880,000, which is substantial for a minimalist, non-combat, and highly experimental game. This indicates that even without mass-market appeal, games that prioritise atmosphere, discovery, and non-traditional mechanics can still reach hundreds of thousands of players and achieve strong cultural recognition within dedicated communities.

itch.io Indie Landscape

To further validate the market for this type of game, I examined itch.io, a platform widely used by independent developers and players interested in experimental and niche projects. Using the tags Adventure, 2D, and Platformer, itch.io returns over 15,000 results, indicating a highly active and saturated creative space for 2D exploration-based games.

This large volume of results demonstrates that there is a sustained interest among both developers and players in 2D adventure and platforming experiences, particularly within the indie scene. Unlike mainstream storefronts, itch.io is not driven by large publishers or marketing budgets, which means the abundance of similar projects reflects genuine grassroots demand rather than commercial pressure.
