R.E.P.O – Research

Overview of R.E.P.O:

R.E.P.O. is a cooperative horror game in which players, guided by artificial intelligence, take on the role of robotic agents tasked with retrieving valuable items from abandoned locations. The game features unpredictable enemies that react dynamically to player behaviour, responding in real time to sounds and movements‌(foringamank, 2025).

My Game Experience:

R.E.P.O. is a game I’ve been playing with friends recently. Based on my gaming experience, I believe there are certain aspects of this game that I can learn from and apply to my own projects.

In my experience, the gameplay of this game is very similar to my project. In both, you collect items whilst avoiding NPCs and taking care not to get hurt, before moving on to the next level once you’ve collected everything. Furthermore, both this game and my project are positioned as horror games.

How my game experience link the project:

Monster Design:

The monster design is a real highlight of this game. Different monsters have distinct auditory and visual senses, and they will pursue players based on their actions; each monster has its own unique mechanics. I believe I could incorporate visual and auditory capabilities into my project as well, rather than relying solely on range detection, which would make the NPCs feel more realistic.

Level and Environment Design:

In the game, due to the limited visibility and the complex layout of the environment, with numerous rooms, I often find myself losing my bearings, which heightens my sense of fear. Therefore, I’ve been considering that, whilst environmental constraints prevent me from using very dim lighting to heighten the players’ fear in my project, I can design the players’ movement paths to be slightly more complex than those in a typical supermarket, incorporating more corners and placing NPCs at these junctions. The sudden appearance of NPCs and the difficulty in finding one’s way can heighten the player’s sense of fear.
